How to Start Crocheting: A Beginner-Friendly Guide
Crochet can look complicated when you first see a finished blanket, bag or amigurumi toy. But every crochet project begins with the same simple things: a hook, some yarn and one stitch at a time.
At LoomLove, we believe learning crochet should feel relaxing, creative and encouraging. You do not need previous experience or expensive equipment to get started. All you need is a little patience and the willingness to practise.
What You Need to Begin
You only need a few basic tools for your first project:
A crochet hook
A ball of medium-weight yarn
A pair of scissors
A yarn needle
Stitch markers, if available
For beginners, a hook around 4 mm to 5 mm is usually comfortable to hold. A smooth, light-coloured yarn is also easier to work with because you can clearly see each stitch.
Try to avoid very fluffy, dark or thin yarn when you are first learning. These yarns can make it harder to see where your hook needs to go.
Learn How to Hold the Hook and Yarn
There is no single correct way to hold a crochet hook. Some people hold it like a pencil, while others hold it like a knife.
The best method is the one that feels natural and does not create tension in your hands.
Keep your grip relaxed. Holding the hook or yarn too tightly can make stitches difficult to work into and may cause hand fatigue.
Begin With the Basic Stitches
Most crochet projects are created using a small group of basic stitches.
Start by learning:
Slip knot
Chain stitch
Slip stitch
Double crochet
Treble crochet
In Australian crochet terminology, a double crochet is a short, compact stitch, while a treble crochet creates a taller and softer fabric.
Practise each stitch slowly before trying to complete a large project. A small square is often the perfect first exercise.
Choose a Simple First Project
Your first project should be small enough to finish without feeling overwhelmed.
Beginner-friendly projects include:
A simple coaster
A small dishcloth
A basic scarf
A granny square
A small pouch
Completing a small project gives you the confidence to move on to something more detailed.
Do Not Worry About Perfect Stitches
Your first stitches may look uneven. Some may be too loose, while others may be too tight. This is completely normal.
Crochet improves through repetition. The more you practise, the easier it becomes to control your yarn tension and create consistent stitches.
Try not to compare your first project with somebody else’s finished work. Every experienced crocheter was once a beginner.
Learn With a Supportive Community
Learning in a class can make the process easier because you can ask questions, see techniques demonstrated and receive help when something does not look right.
LoomLove offers beginner-friendly crochet classes in Noble Park, Melbourne, where students can learn at a comfortable pace in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Most importantly, enjoy the process. Crochet is not only about creating a finished piece. It is also about slowing down, using your hands and discovering what you can make one stitch at a time
